The celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 by the College of Science and Commerce, Mawphlang, organised by the Department of Zoology, was successfully and memorably observed on 22 May 2026. The programme was graciously inaugurated by Shri Mathew Beyond Kurbah, Hon'ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Mawphlang Constituency, whose esteemed presence and encouraging words on environmental awareness and conservation greatly inspired all attendees.

Dr. (Mrs.) B. Gashnga, Principal of the College of Science and Commerce, Mawphlang, delivered the Principal's Address and opening remarks, emphasizing that biodiversity is not only a scientific concern but also a shared responsibility for humanity and future generations. The programme began with a warm welcome address by Smt. Marba Siej, Head of the Department of Mathematics, setting a positive and respectful tone for the celebration. Students of the College further enriched the inaugural session through a beautiful welcome song that added cultural warmth and harmony to the occasion.

The event featured several insightful presentations by distinguished resource persons. Dr. Dran Khlur B. Mukhim delivered an enlightening lecture on "Biodiversity Conservation in Meghalaya", citing the example of bats (Ka Lymbit) and highlighting the urgent need to preserve the state's rich ecological heritage. Mr. Brian D. Kharpran Daly presented "The Unique Biodiversity of Meghalaya's Underground", offering fascinating insights into the hidden natural treasures beneath the land. Shri Graham Bakynson Ranee captivated the audience with his presentation on "Chremistica ribhoi Hajong and Yaakop, 2013, India's Unique Cicada – The World Cup Cicada: Ecology, Culture and Conservation", beautifully linking biodiversity with culture, identity and conservation awareness.

A drawing competition was also organised as part of the celebration, with enthusiastic participation from students of Mawphlang Higher Secondary School, MDC Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Mount Hermon Higher Secondary School, and the College of Science and Commerce, Mawphlang. The competition showcased the creativity, environmental awareness and artistic talents of the participants through inspiring artworks focused on biodiversity, nature and conservation. Their active involvement added colour, excitement and meaningful engagement to the programme.

The collaboration and financial assistance of the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board contributed significantly to the success of the programme. The event was further enriched by the gracious presence of distinguished invitees from the Zoological Survey of India, North Eastern Regional Centre, including Dr. Saipari Sailo, Scientist-D, and Shri Bhaskar Saikia, Assistant Entomologist, along with the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) members of Umkaber and Jani Mawiong.

The celebration witnessed active interaction and enthusiastic participation from students, teaching faculty and non-teaching staff of the College. Their involvement throughout the programme created a lively and engaging atmosphere, encouraging meaningful discussions and greater awareness about biodiversity conservation. The collective participation and cooperation of all attendees greatly contributed to the success and memorable spirit of the celebration.

A tree plantation programme was also conducted as part of the celebration. The activity witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, non-teaching staff and invited guests of the College of Science and Commerce, Mawphlang. The plantation drive symbolised a collective commitment towards environmental protection, sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity for future generations.
